Tokyo Paralympics: Sumit Antil sets new world record for winning javelin gold medal
India's medal rush continued at the Tokyo Paralympic Games, with Sumit Antil erasing his world record in the men's javelin F64 category by throwing 68.55 meters, giving India its second gold medal at the 2020 Paralympic Games, with Sandeep Chaudhary finishing fourth. Throw 62.20 meters. He finished fourth in the F44 javelin at the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro
After a gold and three more medals by shooter Avni Lekhara in the morning session, Sumit made India a memorable day in the Games with a sensational performance. Mikal Burian of Australia won bronze with a throw of 66.29 meters while Dulan Kodithuvakku of Sri Lanka won bronze with a throw of 65.61. Sumit was the silver medalist of the 2019 World Para Athletics Championships, while Sandeep won gold in that competition. Sumit, who entered the Paralympic Games, was a world record holder with a throw of 62.88 meters. He broke that record with the first throw of 66.95m and improved it in the second attempt with 68.08m and advanced with his fifth which eventually proved to be the gold medal winning throw of 68.55m.
Born in Sonepat, Sumit competed in the nationally competent physical javelin, including the 2021 Indian Grand Prix event in Patiala, India. He participated in competent physical wrestling until 2015, at which time he took a three-year break from the sport to focus on his studies. He competed in para athletics in 2018 after being encouraged by other para-athletes in his village. He joined Para Athletics in 2018. He trains with Sandeep Chaudhary at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi, India and is coached by Virender Dhankad. He lost his left leg below the knee after being involved in a motorbike accident in 2005.
