New 'BH' India number range for vehicles - all you need to know: benefits, processing and more

The Ministry of Roads, Transport and Highways has recently announced a new number range called Bharat Range marked by 'BH' to facilitate unified transfer of vehicles. The Transport Ministry has said that a vehicle with this registration mark will not be required to assign a new registration mark when the owner of the vehicle shifts from one state to another.

The Next step comes in the context of a number of citizen-centric measures and an IT-based solution for vehicle registration taken by the government. However, one of the key issues in the vehicle registration process that still needs to be addressed was vehicle re-registration at the time of moving to another state. We are finding the benefits and process of applying the new number series and who applies to it in our All You Need Series-

What is BH number range?

The BH number range is a newly introduced number range for vehicle registration across India especially for those vehicle owners who shift from one state to another on a regular basis due to the shifting nature of the job. BH denotes India and will replace the state letters in the number plate indicating the status of vehicle registration, such as UP or DL.

YY is the year of first registration

BH stands for India Series Code

#### Used for numbers 0000 to 9999 (randomized).

XX is the alphabet (AA to ZZ).

Benefits of BH range?

The station is relocated with both government and private sector employees. Under Section 47 of the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988, such a move creates a feeling of uneasiness in the minds of the employees regarding the transfer of registration from the parent state to another state, while the person is allowed to keep the vehicle for 12 months. In any state other than the state where the vehicle is originally registered, new registration with the new state-registration officer must be done within 12 months.

With the new BH series, motor vehicle tax will be levied for a period of two years or in multiple. The scheme will facilitate free movement of personal vehicles to any state in India after relocation to a new state. Also, a new state registration is required at the time of re-sale of a vehicle, as it becomes difficult to find a new owner in a new state with a vehicle having an old state registration plate. This new series will also facilitate easy ownership transfer of used cars.

How to install BH series plate?

Step 1: Vehicle owners will apply for a new plate on the original RTO of the vehicle purchase and provide an ID issued by the government to prove employment.

Step 2: The owner will pay road tax for only 2 years or a maximum of 4 years or 6 years depending on the length of his tenure in the state where the car was purchased.

Step 3: Previously, a 'No Objection Certificate' from the parent state was required to assign a new registration mark to another state. With the new BH category, and no state involved, NOC is not required and the owner can apply directly for re-registration in the new state.

Step 4: This state tax will now apply and the owner can wait for the previous term for new registration.

Step 5: However, if the new owner fails to renew the RC within this time limit, a fine will be levied under the MV Act if the traffic police ever seize the vehicles.

Step 6: Refunds are also applicable if the owner wants to pay the road tax of the new state and there is still time left for the previous state. In that case, an application for refund of road tax must be filed in the parent state.
