'I made my position clear in Parliament but ...': Asaduddin Owaisi disturbed by suspicion of liking Taliban

AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Tuesday expressed doubts that they had soft corners for the Taliban and encouraged the Centre's Narendra Modi government to declare the militant group a terrorist organization. Addressing a press conference here, the MP from Firebrand Hyderabad also demanded from the government that India, which currently chairs the UN Committee on Sanctions, assure that none of the Taliban leaders would be removed from the list of terrorists.

"Why do you doubt me in relation to the Taliban?", Owaisi said in response to a question from some BJP leaders who identified him as a Taliban ideologue. Owaisi said he had made clear his stance on the Taliban on the floor of parliament but his words of caution were not heeded.

During the discussion on the CAA, I urged the government to consider making the law religion-neutral by warning of a possible takeover by the Taliban. But for that strategic mistake, we would be in a position to provide safe haven to members of the Tajik, Uzbek and other minority ethnic groups. He also said that the Taliban occupation would strengthen Pakistan and China while giving India a lot to worry about which was regrettable as India had invested a lot in Afghanistan.

The country spent Rs 35,000 crore in Afghanistan. Thousands of its youth have been educated on our planet. "We have put a lot at stake in this harsh country, which is on the way to the port of Chabahar in Iran," Owaisi lamented. What the Modi government is doing is only sending envoys to negotiate with the Taliban representatives and it should leave the diplomats in an uneasy country. The Modi government should declare the Taliban a terrorist organization if it means business. Let us also declare that no Taliban leader will be given legitimacy by being removed from the list of global terrorists. I want to see if he has the courage to do so, Owaisi shuddered.

Asked about the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, the head of AIMIM, whose party has made some inroads in Bihar, said they were planning to field candidates in about 100 of the 403 seats there. When his attention was drawn to criticism for involving people with criminal ancestry like Allahabad Mafia don Atik Ahmed, he got annoyed and Praj Thakur is above Thakur Ninda (Dudh Ki Dhuli)?

He also alleged that Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has a large criminal record of BJP and its allied MLAs like JDU. "If he is a respected public representative, then Atik Ahmed is also a citizen of this country with some unsubstantiated allegations and is therefore eligible to contest elections," Owaisi said.
